Objective

Create a video for the PushButton Summit, highlighting the big-name companies and cutting-edge technologies participating in Utah’s digital media industry. We needed to shoot and utilize interviews from leaders from these companies, find a solution for a story and transitions, and retain attention for up to 5-6 minutes.

Solution

From the start, we knew it would be difficult to create a visual solution that was appealing and effective to an extremely talented digital audience. We were also working within a budget and timeline that was significantly lower than the ones they’re accustomed.

The big idea turned out, well, to be an idea. We focused on the artistry of the audience and how most ideas start as notes or doodles. Excited for an opportunity to let loose and have some fun, I started drawing. Characters and scenes were drawn piece by piece. Some elements were designed to be static, while others (such as a monster) were created in layers with an animation and scene in mind. The arm movements were shot as stop motion (in camera) on green screen. The voice-over and music set the tempo, while the characters, objects and overall visual idea came to life in post-production.

Seeing the audience’s reaction firsthand at the Summit was priceless. They found it interesting and the positive response helped build a better awareness for the creative and digital atmosphere for the state. During the process, I concepted the direction with a partner, illustrated all art, and directed the shoot and video post-production.
